Kenny McKinstry was fastest through stage 6 albeit by just 0.2s over Eugene Donnelly with Darren Gass a further 0.2s in arrears. It doesn’t seem a lot but those fractions of a second make all the difference here in the white hot atmosphere of Lurgan Park. There are just 2 stages left to do and Kenny McKinstry leads Eugene Donnelly by 6.7s which should be enough providing McKinstry has no problems. The race is on now really for 3rd place with Darren Gass just 1.3s behind Derek McGarrity. There are several drivers very close to the top 10 and they will be fighting hard over the last couple of stages to try and get on to that elusive leaderboard. John McKeown for example is on 11.26.3 although his Escort Cosworth had some gearbox problems in stage 6. John McGlaughlin is on 11.26.4. James Gillen 11.26.9. Ray Bremmer has had a couple of good stages and his total is 11.29.2. Billy McClelland may have deranged the steering of his Lancer slightly and having been 6th o/a after stage 2 the Ayrshire man is now on 11.38.1 and dropping back.

When Eugene Donnelly came into service after stage 6 he said. “We went hard but I think Kenny was faster”. Kenny McKinstry commented. “We had a nice clean run”. Derek McGarrity said. “I was a bit untidy over the gravel”. Darren Gass brought his Impreza WRC into service, grinning from ear to ear and he said. “I’ll keep winding her up”. Mark Doyle in 6th place is really nursing the clutch in his Celica now. Wesley Patterson turned in another impressive time to hold 7th and top placed Mk2 Escort, although the fastest Escort through stage 6 was Camillus Bradley. Camillus lost some time early in the rally when his Escort burst a brake pipe but he’s certainly making up for lost time now. Gary White was quick through stage 6 having discovered that he should be driving the Subaru in a completely different fashion from his Escort Cosworth. The Subaru develops the power at much lower revs. In Group N Raymond Johnson pulled out all the stops through stage 6 to keep John McGlaughlin at bay and Raymond said. “I certainly tried hard”. John said he had a good run but he missed a gear at one point. More news later: BRIAN & LIZ PATTERSON & MICHAEL
