No sooner had we talked of clearing skies after stage 1 than the mizzle started for stage 2. However the damp tracks did not slow the leading cars down and most of the drivers improved by a couple of seconds. McKinstry was fastest again and is going to be a hard man to catch if he keeps up his current momentum. Kenny said after that 2nd stage. “I wasn’t just as tidy but getting lots of grip”. Eugene Donnelly said. “That was a bit better, I’m having a ball”. Derek McGarrity told us when his Subaru came in. “I just don’t know where I’m losing the time”. Darren Gass was nearly 5s faster through stage 2 than his first run and he commented. “I can’t get going right at all”.

Raymond Johnston continues to lead group N and said that the tyres on his Lancer were working really well although they went off the boil a bit for the final chicane. John McGlaughlin is 2nd in Group N but was the faster of the two on that 2nd stage and giving his usual little laugh he told us. “When I saw the drizzle starting I put on full wet tyres and I was going from lock to lock on the back bit of the stage. I’m just glad the stage wasn’t any longer”. Munster Joinery man Alan Ring is on his first visit to Lurgan Park so his early caution is fairly justified, but Alan is still lying just outside the top 20 with a couple of very respectable GpN times.

Mark Doyle has had his first stage time sorted, there was a small mix up over the 30s interval, and he is now into the top 10 but he said the clutch in his Celica is “jiggered”. John McKeown hopes to change the alternator on his Escort Cosworth here at service. John is lying just outside the top 10 and his team mate Brian Dowey is just a couple of seconds back. Gary White improved by almost 4s on his first run as he becomes accustomed to his ex works Subaru. Gary is lying just inside the top 20. Alan Carmichael is in a hired Impreza WRC and is still getting used to the car, stalled it on that 2nd stage but still is 10th o/a.
