Early damp conditions are giving way to rising temperatures and drying roads here in Lurgan Park and Kenny McKinstry celebrated by setting a scintillating time on the opening stage. Banbridge man Kenny with the experience of 10 wins here over the years knows how to combat every condition over the tricky Lurgan Park lanes. If Kenny’s opening speed is anything to go by he’s going to be a hard man to catch today. Eugene Donnelly commented. “I had a settled run and enjoyed it. It is 3 years since I’ve been here but many of the corners still bring a smile to your face, its such good fun”. Kenny McKinstry just said. “We had a good run”. Derek McGarrity said. “Good enough run, a bit timid over the gravel but I can’t see how McKinstry could have been 5s faster”.

Glenn Allen was next up in the times and the Cookstown man said he felt a bit rusty. James Gillen made the same comment, James down in 15th place. Mark Doyle told us that his wife Mairead who is on her first rally, started to giggle going through the first couple of corners, but then she settled down and they had a reasonably good run. Their stage time provisionally 2.19.5. Gary White was in at the deep end on his first run in the ex Piero Latti GpA Subaru and Gary found himself braking far too early for the corners. John McKeown reported that a red light came on in the dash of his Escort Cosworth just leaving the start line and he had no power st4eering for the rest of the stage but his time was still respectable.

Wesley Patterson was the fastest of the Mk2 Escort Challenge contenders while Phillip Hunter was quickest of the Historic category in his Escort.

Principal non starters from the original programme entry list are Sean Devine (Car No..4): Denis Biggerstaff who was to be at 6 but his Impreza gave engine trouble. Also a non-starter is Trevor Harding (No.20).
