The opening stage, Deerpark, was always going to be slippy and gravelly but as mist enshrouded the Knockmealdown Mountains a fine drizzle made the going even slippier for the drivers. Patrick Elliott reckoned before the start that the first stage, very narrow and twisty in places, would not suit his Subaru S12 but there he is – the fastest. Patrick said little at stage finish except “very slippy”. A bystander slipped his hand on to the top of Patrick’s Subaru tyres and said. “Stone cold”. Niall Maguire said he was being a bit cautious.

Garry Jennings, fastest of the GpN drives aid. “No consistency in the grip”. Garry was looking a bit sleepy at the start as he was at a wedding in the north yesterday, but he certainly wasn’t looking slippy at the stage finish. Kevin Kelleher told us that he was on a new type of tyre this time and he also was being a bit cautious. Dave Weston Jnr is here on the Stonethrowers to try and get a little bit more asphalt experience before the Ulster Rally and he had a good run through that opening stage.

Matthew Wilson and his co driver Scott Martin are running 7th on the road and when Matthew brought the new 1600 Fiesta into the finish of the stage he had a quick look over the stage times of the cars in front and said. “Not bad. It really went pretty well”. Brian O’Mahony in the Clio was 12s down on Mathew and he felt he was being a bit cautious.

Andrew Bushe recorded 4.33 in his Saxo, and in a change of “cautious” Andrew said he was rusty. Some more times from that first stage included: John Somers in the Celica was on 4.19. Thomas Fitzmaurice (Lancer) 4.22: Shay Power (Escort) 4.22: James Travers in the GpN Clio a pretty noteworthy 4.25: Adrian Evans did 4.31 and Nenagh man David Percy in the Escort Maxi 4.29.
