This has been a fairly historic rally, a privilege to work on as well, to be involved in Keith Cronin/Greg Shinnors taking their Group N Lancer to victory on this asphalt National Championship rally. Keith has won a forestry national rally before but hasn’t clinched victory on a national asphalt event. He put up a superbly talented display and was fastest on 7 of the 9 stages, equal fastest on one and Patrick Elliott was fastest on the other. Keith had one small problem when a tyre went flat in stage 8 but otherwise it all went well. He said at the finish. “These were real stages and needed some serious driving. This win today puts me back in focus, up to speed for the Manx”. Second placed Niall Maguire was just delighted to have taken maximum points in the championship and that is all he could really talk about at the finish. Current National champion Patrick Elliott on the other hand was a bit downhearted and he said. “Even on the last stage we pushed on but the car just felt horrible, under steering and over steering. We do lose heart in stage 8 but I was trying hard through stage 9. We will have to get to the bottom of the problem. I am reluctant to blame the car, possibly it had something to do with the cylinder head being cracked early and we had to put water in frequently. I really did try hard at the end but I just wasn’t fast enough”.

Kevin Barrett had a clear run following his stage 6 puncture to take 4th place. Garry Jennings struggled a bit towards the end as his Lancer had a soft front strut but Garry still took maximum GpN c/ship points. Kevin Kelleher made a charge towards the end to clinch 2nd c/ship GpN finisher ahead of Eamonn Daly which keeps the category in the series alive before the next round in Sligo. Welsh driver Thomas Davies retired his Escort from a very good top 10 place when the exhaust manifold broke. Daragh O’Riordan also dropped out of the top 10 when he crashed his Clio in stage 7. John Somers had a great drive in his Celica to finish 8th o/a and win class 15. Shay Power was slowed towards the end when his Escort prop shaft came adrift. James Travers had a great run to win cl.3. Marty McCormack has won cl.6 from fellow Citroen C2 Max driver Andrew Hockridge. Finally for now we would like to thank everyone who helped with and supported the RallyNews service. Well done to Pat Shiel and all his hard working Carrick-on-Suir MC team for putting on a very successful event.
