It was certainly a grandstand finish for this Cavan Stages Rally with Kevin Barrett leading after stage 7, Niall Maguire drew level after stage 8, so it was right down to the wire on stage 9. Kevin Barrett’s Subaru suffered a puncture and Niall Maguire was 5s faster through the stage to win the rally by 5 seconds.

John McGlaughlin pulled out all the stops to get his Mitsubishi Lancer ahead of the similar car of Neil McCance to finish 3rd o/a and best group N and highest points scorer in the Evo Challenge. Russell Woods had a little gearbox glitch with his Escort on stage 7 but still kept the hammer down to finish 5th o/a and best 2 wheel drive. John said at the finish. “I got the set up really good for the last 3 stages and it gave me great confidence.” Neil McCance told us. “I had a big scare in stage 7 and then a monumental moment in stage 9. I was rack to rack in 5th gear on a 2 right over crest. Fair play to John. I gave him 2 tyres for that last loop and then he went and beat me!” Neil McCance now leads the Evo points with 34 and Liam Egan is 2nd on 28 points.

Sean Devine recovered brilliantly from his delay sin stages 6 and 7 to score fastest time overall through the final stage to finish 6th overall having been 9th at service.

When Kevin Barrett brought his Triton Showers Subaru into the finish it was obvious that he was pretty shattered at the result. Kevin drove brilliantly during the day and then that flat tyre deflated his chances within sight of the chequered flag. When quizzed on the punctures Kevin said. “The only thing I can think is that is that the tyre got damaged on a very heavy landing after a big jump.” Niall Maguire was first over to congratulate Kevin and Niall said. “That was a tough one today. I really enjoyed it. Kevin made it for me.” This is 5 wins now for Niall on this Cavan Rally.

Maurice Moffett was OOing today in his Starlet as a further fund raising effort for the Paul Gallagher Appeal and when Maurice brought his car into the finish he was beaming from ear to ear and said. “That’s as good a rally as you’ll get. Great stages and very well organised”. That sentiment about the rally was echoed by nearly all the top drivers.

Just some of the class honours today: Russell Woods won Class 13 after a brilliant drive. James Cassidy won class 12. Peter Wilson has won Cl.11 and also won the Drive of the Day for fastest cl.11 car on stage 3 in the HASS Border Championship. Peter survived a gearbox problem over the last few stages where 1st gear disappeared.

The cars are still coming in here to the finish and early news would indicate that Adrian McElhinney has had a very dominant win in the Citroen Racing Trophy, his C2R2 finishing first in fine style. Sam Moffett was heading for the runner up spot but we hear unofficially that his car has broken a drive shaft and may not finish. Finally for now many thanks to all who supported and helped with our RallyNews service today and well done to Marty Sherlock and his team in the Cavan MC for putting on such a very good event. Our thanks to Dougie Hughes and Andrew Bushe/Jim Crozier as well as Angus Sealy (Results).
