Just one of the leading drivers had any problem on the opening stage and that was Rodney Wilton whose Escort was stuck at the start of the stage with a flat battery. Niall Maguire was first competing car down the road and he seemed happy enough at stage finish although he did remark on how slippy the road was. A couple of minutes earlier Dessie Keenan in his black Escort who is running as OO told us. “Never seen a road so slippy, it was dry but it must have been greasy. I’m on slick tyres and I don’t think they are the right job”.

Kevin Barrett in the Triton Showers Impreza reported no problems while Adrian McElvaney said that he felt rusty and as well as that he missed a stack of gears and an old problem with the gear selection seems to have returned. There wasn’t much wrong with his stage time though. Sean Gallagher hasn’t done a rally since last year’s Sligo event so he went pretty well considering. Sean’s main concern is to make sure the gearbox on his Impreza behaves itself following troubles last year.

Maurice Moffett was the fastest of the 2 wheel drive runners and he certainly made a great start. Gary McPhillips seems rather subdued, his time 8.49, just outside the top 10. Adrian Hetherington for a change said that he was keeping it neat and tidy. Anthony Hand in his 1600 Escort had a great time but explained that it was his home stage. Raymond Drury admitted to making a mess of the turn square right into turn square right junction on the main road between Threemilehouse and NewBliss. His time was still pretty respectable, 9.04.

Danny McBride was the fastest group N runner and just made it into the top 10 amongst the early times. Some other times include: Donagh Kelly in his GpN Lancer 9.01: Mac McKenna in his Peugeot after a long lay off 9.03: Russell Woods in his Escort went well on a time of 8.51: Gerry Cassidy in his G3 was 8.55. Raymond Conlon in the black Corolla GT was 8.55. Threemilehouse man Damien Hagan recorded 9.02. John Cairns in the GpA Impreza did 8.50. Jack Maguire in the Escort Cosworth 9.11> Damien Toner 9.08.

Early times from the Citroen Racing Trophy contenders show that young Sam Moffett and Martin Tynan tied on 9.18. Barry Evans’ C2R2 stopped the clock on 9.19. Series leader Adrian McElhinney did 9.21. Mark Kane 9.29. Paul Manton did 9.41. Sean Agnew 9.44.
