Just 10s separated the first 7 cars through the opening Day 2 stage on this Pirelli International Rally. Guy Wilks in the Proton S2000 was 2.5s faster than Keith Cronin. Keith was 2s up on Mark Higgins and Phillip Morrow was just over half a second back on Mark. Weather conditions are beautiful here at Carlisle and no doubt in Kielder it is much the same. Wilks covered the almost 7 mile long Pundershaw stage in 5m1.6s which is pretty stunning. Keith Cronin was a little unsettled within himself for last night’s stages but was in top form this morning and it certainly showed on that Pundershaw stage where he was “best of the regular group N cars” behind Wilks. Matti Rantanen in the Clio Ragnotti maintains his 11th o/a and Rob Swann is up to 12th having had the throttle problem on his Impreza sorted out at service.

Euan Thorburn/Claire Mole have reportedly retired with mechanical problems in that 3rd stage. Andreas Sjolander is running in the Super Rally today following the problem with his Lancer’s fuel pump on the way out to the first stage yesterday. The young Swedish driver had more problems this morning with the car, reportedly the fuel regulator broke between parc ferme and service, so he is having a fraught time. Max Utting had to push his Impreza which wouldn’t fire up from parc ferme into service this morning and escaped any time penalties. Max was lying 14th overnight just behind Craig Breen who was 13th o/a and leading the Fiestas. Interestingly Matt Edwards who was the Fiesta winner on the Bulldog Rally was leading the Pirelli Challenge part of the rally overnight, but was 23s slower than Craig Breen over last night’s 2 stages. 17 year old Mark Donnelly led the Fiestas after the first stage last night but dropped a bit of time on the 2nd when his fuel pump gave some problem.

Marty McCormack led the Citroen Racing Trophy overnight while 1st round winner Jason Pritchard managed to extricate his C2R2 Max from a Kielder ditch but lost a lot of time. There was little damage and Jason is running today but very far back. McCormack is safely through stage 3 Pundershaw and still leads the Citroens with Mark Gamble 2nd.

The Historic Rally competitors were competing over the 2 Friday night stages and the first 4 this morning and as the early times came in after stage 6 Dessie Nutt/Geraldine McBride have won the Historics in their Porsche by over a minute from Paul Mankin/Desmond Bell in their Lotus Cortina.
