Early reports from the stages suggest that although the roads are dry it is hard going for the drivers with a fresh scattering of stones making the conditions very difficult. The big question mark before the start was how fast would the new Proton S2000 be with Guy Wilks driving and there is the answer above, Guy 5s up over a distance of 8.5 miles and this is his first time in the car on a rally. Before the start Mark Higgins said that he has changed the suspension and centre differential on his Impreza and it really felt comfortable and inspired confidence. Phillip Morrow has shown on this opening stage that he has lost none of his old flair, his time right up there with the best in the business.

Some times still coming in from just outside the top 10: Euan Thorburn is 11th. Matti Rantanen 12th in his Clio Ragnotti. Rob Swann is being shown as 13th of the early times with Max Utting 14th and Mark Donnelly in his Fiesta 15th. There could of course be more times to come in.

The Historic cars were running in front of the International and Dessie Nutt led the Historics in his Porsche 911 from Paul Mankin in his Lotus Cortina. Jonathan Gale in the Sunbeam Tiger went off the road just after a cautioned square right junction with a downhill approach after a crest. Rupert Lomax in his Escort led the Post Historics from Tim Mason in his Porsche and Russell Morgan was 3rd in his Escort. Phil Squires led the classic section in his Escort from Seamus O’Connell and Dick Slaughter 3rd (all in Escorts). Seamus O’Connell as the leader after the first stage and he thinks the time probably wasn’t right and in any case he backed off on the 2nd stage when the temperature gauge “went full of the clock”. This turned out to be nothing more than a loose wire!
