Stages 6 and 6 through Ring and Dunworley have brought no real changes to the fop of the field but Keith Cronin dropped a place when he spun his Lancer in Dunworley and Fintan Canty crashed out of the top 1- following a major accident exiting Ring village.

Out at the front of the field John Dalton was fastest through stage 5, Ring, his Darrian ideally suited to the brilliantly fast sweeps along the coast road. Denis Cronin was 2nd fastest. Liam McCarthy was caught napping ever so slightly and was quite a few seconds down. Through stage 6, Dunworley, McCarthy seemed to pull out the stops, although he said he wasn’t taking chances, but he was 15s faster than Dalton and 7s faster than 2nd placed Denis Cronin. Denis said “We had a good run at the Ring, the car felt beautiful”. Jim Harrison looked slightly disappointed when he saw his time for stage 6 compared with the other top drivers. Although Jim is 3rd overall he is still not really threatening for the lead. He did say that the car felt fine and the tyres worked spot on for that run.

Keith Cronin was 2nd fastest through stage 5 but then had a monumental spin after the crossroads in stage 6 and said. “I don’t really understand why the car let go, I didn’t feel I was pushing too hard”. Ashley Field continues to put up a good performance in his Darrian although he got slightly lost through the very fast stuff on stage 6.

Phil Collins was held up a bit behind Keith Cronin on stage 6 but Phil is still having a good run. Mark Nangle lost time behind Canty’s accident, but Nangle is still lying 2nd GpN to Keith Cronin. Sarah & Amy Moynihan are having some more clutch troubles with their Lancer, they are lying just outside the top 20 and 3rd GpN. Not only does Keith Cronin lead GpN but he is also the top points scorer so far in the Mitsubishi Evo Challenge. Adrian Hetherington was forced to retire his Mk2 Escort on the Ring stage when the clutch went. There is a block of approximately 20 cars who are running well out of sequence following the accident earlier involving Ed O’Callaghan. One of those drivers is Marty McCormack. He is up to 15th o/a in his Citroen C2R2 Max and he was changing front tyres and bleeding the brakes after stage 4. Marty was leading class 6 from Daragh O’Riordan in hi sS1600 Clio. Stanley Ballantine came back into the gpN picture and indeed the Evo Challenge points and despite his earlier accident he was 20th o/a.

In the Citroen Racing Trophy Sam Moffett is leading in his C2R2 from Barry Evans with Adrian McElhinney 3red. Kevin O’Donoghue has got his Mk2 Escort up to 15th o/a and he said that following earlier problems with the car he is in cruise mode now. Tony Murphy, No.48, has banged his white Escort on a square right over gravel following the chicane in SS6. Vincent Goggin has retired his black Peugeot 205 with a broken drive shaft. Highest placed Honda Cup contender is Damien McCarthy, up to 14th o/a ahead of Martin Cunningham.

Finally for now congratulations to legendary commentator Dougie Hughes who celebrates his 76th birthday today. On the news that Manchester united were beaten by Liverpool today Dougie happened to drop into the conversation that he used to play for Arsenal and Doncaster! He is a very remarkable man. He was also a works trials rider.
