RALLY NEWS NO.4 Service/Saturday 1pm

UNOFFICIAL LEADERBOARD AFTER STAGE 3 Ballinascarthy
1st (3) Liam McCarthy/Kieran Murphy (Corolla WRC) 30.47.2
2nd (4) Jim Harrison/Harvey Bell (Impreza WRC) 31.09.0
3rd (2) John Dalton/Gwynfor Jones (Darrian) 31.24.9
4th (5) Denis Cronin/Helen O'Sullivan (Impreza WRC) 31.31.3
5th (6) Phil Collins/Derek Brannigan (Escort) 31.58.0
6th (7) Keith Cronin/Greg Shinnors (Lancer N) 32.35.6

Following his off road excursion in stage 2 Keith Cronin & co driver Greg Shinnors were certainly making up for lost time in stage 3 where their Lancer was fastest overall, 12s quicker than 2nd quickest Liam McCarthy. At stage finish Keith joked. “We’ll just have to be fastest on every stage now to win the rally!”. His off road excursion in stage 2 cost approximately 2m so if the young Cork man wants to win the rally, with 13 stages remaining, he certainly needs to go for it! It was noticeable that all the top cars were quicker through stage which was a repeat of stage 1. It is a symptom of this morning’s warm sunny conditions that the roads are drying so well.

Liam McCarthy reported no problems at all. While 2nd placed Jim Harrison said that his tyres were going off. Phil Collins confirmed that the conditions were so much better for the 2nd run through the stage and he was laughing when he came to the stop board.

Looking back slightly – after 2 stages Manus Kelly in his Escort suddenly appeared in 7th o/a in the official results and that was despite a few niggly problems earlier on. Mark Nangle was 2nd in group N in his Subaru and he reported a good clean run so far. Martin McCormack is debuting his new Citroen C2R2 Max on this event and he was leading class 6 and 16th o/a after 2 stages. Daragh O’Riordan was 2nd in that class with his Clio.

In the Citroen Racing Trophy category Paul Manton topped the time sheets after stage 2 from Sam Moffett with Barry Evans 3rd. Having said that, Adrian McElhinney was quickest of the Citroens on one of the stages, but on another one was blocked by a queue of cars that were stuck behind an accident. We do know that Sean O’Donovan in the Sentinel GpN Subaru caused a blockage and Stanley Ballantine also caused a delay to some other cars when he put his Lancer on its roof. John Quill had a spin at the very first corner of the first stage and had to do a spot of reversing to get going. In the new Honda championship Martin Cunningham led from Damien McCarthy.

Just outside the leaderboard: Frank Kelly 33.28: Ashley Field 33.06: Adrian Hetherington 33.33: Fintan Canty 33.08:
