RALLY NEWS NO.3 Service/Saturday Noon

UNOFFICIAL LEADERBOARD AFTER STAGE 2 Clogagh
1st (3) Liam McCarthy/Kieran Murphy (Corolla WRC) 20.34.4
2nd (4) Jim Harrison/Harvey Bell (Impreza WRC) 20.44.6
3rd (2) John Dalton/Gwynfor Jones (Darrian) 21.05.5
4th (5) Denis Cronin/Helen O'Sullivan (Impreza WRC) 21.14.8
5th (6) Phil Collins/Derek Brannigan (Escort) 21.29.4
6th (18) Fintan Canty/Denis O'Mahony (Escort) 22.19.9

Liam McCarthy and his co driver Kieran Murphy were fastest through stage 2, the 17.9km Clogagh test. However, their Corolla WRC stopped the clock just a fraction of a second faster than Jim Harrison in his Impreza WRC. McCarthy reported that he had spun his Corolla at a village crossroads but otherwise everything was fine.Jim Harrison said he is not settling down to a rhythm as yet but of course it is early days in the rally and all to play for. Denis Cronin reported that he stalled his Subaru engine at the start of stage 2 and it took ages to fire up.

Phil Collins described the opening stage, Ballinascarthy, as “as slippy a stage as I can ever remember and I’ve done a few!” Keith Cronin blotted his copybook in stage 2 when he hit the wiper switch on his Lancer at the wrong moment, the screen got smeared and he was late on the brakes for a square left and the car ended up in a field. There is not too much damage although the turbo boost seems to be not quite right now, and the front left suspension is slightly out of kilter. His total now is 22.35.1.

In the battle for the Mk2 Escort supremacy Phil Collins has the edge. Fintan Canty is going extremely well and is in 6th place. Frank Kelly is unofficially 8th just ahead of Adrian Hetherington. Kelly has new 15 inch brakes fitted to his Escort but is still having problems getting the car to slow down. Leonard Downey had a spin in his Sunbeam in the first stage. Ed O’Callaghan had a major 6th gear moment in stage 2 and has crumpled the front of his lime green Escort. Manus Kelly had all sorts of problems with getting his intercom and HANS device on and he has lost a bit of time. No times as yet for Rodney White but he said he is “not at it today”. Alan Treacy in the Corolla GT is going quite well and his total is 23.13. James Stafford did not really get going because of mechanical problems with his Darrian.

Billy Coleman is having a great run OOing in the Frank O’Mahony 6R4. He said. “Its going well but maybe at 61 years of age this is a mistake!” Whatever, his prize drive co driver Adrian O’Sullivan from Bandon is having a ball! Ashley Field/Janice Moore are having a very good run in their Darrian and are up to 7th o/a on a total of 22.34.0.
