2nd (7) Keith Cronin/Greg Shinnors (Lancer N) 10.30.0

6th (6) Phil Collins/Derek Brannigan (Escort) 10.57.5

Happily the heavy mizzly rain from last night has all cleared away and it is the most beautiful day here in West Cork as the drivers tackled the opening stage, Ballinascarthy, sponsored by O’Donovan’s Hotel in Clonakilty.

John Dalton was first on the road through the 18.7km stage and John reported that although the roads were dry they were still very slippery. Liam McCarthy echoed those thoughts about the roads being slippy when he brought his Corolla WRC into the finish line, but at least he had 4 wheel drive to combat the damp patches.

English visitor Jim Harrison reported a spin and a stall with his Impreza WRC. Keith Cronin was very quick in the stage but reckoned the rear suspension of his Lancer was set just a little too hard.

Kenny McKinstry was at the end of that first stage and when Denis Cronin came in Kenny remarked. “I’d bit a wee bit concerned about that engine Denis”.

Phil Collins had a brilliant run to be fastest of the Mk2 Escorts. Some other times include: Frank Kelly on 11.32: Adrian Hetherington 11.35: Ashley Field 11.35: Fintan Canty had a good run to score 11.15.

Sarah & Amy Moynihan had the clutch changed on their Lancer before the start of the rally and they would like to thank Derek McGeehan, James Foley and Colm Grant for all their help.

Looking further afield – it is raining in Cyprus this morning which is making conditions muddy for the world championship rally. Loeb still leads despite a spin in his Citroen after stage 9. Hirvonen is now 2nd: Sordo 3rd and Petter Solberg 4th. Solberg reported some engine troubles. Latvala has been off the road and reports are suggesting that Ogier has had a roll but still going.
