It was a great finish to this Mayo Stages Rally with reigning Champion Patrick Elliott and his co driver Paul Goodman having to pull out all the stops to win by just a few seconds from former Champion Niall Maguire. Kevin Barrett kept his head towards the end to finish 3rd just ahead of group N winner Gareth MacHale who brought the new Opel Corsa S2000 into a brilliant 4th place. Dramas towards the end included Fergal Costello crashing his GpN Lancer out of 7th o/a. Eamonn Daly lost a lot of time when his Lancer went off the road on the final stage. He managed to get the black Mitsubishi going and into the finish but dropped around 8m. When Patrick Elliott brought his rather battered Impreza into the finish here in Castlebar he said. “We didn’t make it easy for ourselves. My tyre choice wasn’t quite right during the day and the spin in stage 5 didn’t help. The car was wandering slightly and I had to be careful with the brakes, preserve the tyres towards the end. It was a very tough rally but very good. It was well organised and I’d like to congratulate and thank everybody for their efforts on such a difficult day weatherwise”. Elliott’s co driver Paul Goodman was particularly pleased to have won as his mother is from Castlebar! Niall Maguire gave a little grimace at the finish. He was so close to winning, but it wasn’t to be today. Kevin Barrett just said. “Glad to be here!”

Gareth MacHale reckoned he couldn’t have gone much quicker this afternoon but as the roads dried he could not match the world rally cars for outright pace. However it was a very significant result for Gareth and for the new S2000 Corsa. Gareth did have the rear springs changed to a softer version and he said it transformed the handling of the car. Garry Jennings relaxed towards the end and set a couple of very good times but had to be content with 5th o/a and 2nd GpN. Brian O’Mahony maintained his 6th place and won class 6. The last news we have on the Juniors was that Terry McGonigle was leading in his Civic from Eamonn Brady also in a Honda, this was after stage 7. Ferlin Taylor was 3rd in an Integra.

Finally for now, our thanks to all who supported and helped with the Rally News service. Well done to Jonathan Rice, Joe Corcoran, Hilary Evans and all the Mayo MC team plus the many others who helped with this very well organised and successful Mayo Stages Rally.
