Stage seven has caused another upset with the retirement of Michael Barrable in his Focus.  Michael had been challenging Niall Maguire for the lead but it seems that the Dublin car dealers Focus has stopped due to a gear selection problem.  Patrick Elliott was fastest through the stage on an 8.05, five seconds faster than rally leader Niall Maguire, Patrick chose a harder compound tyre and admits that he has not given up yet and will push for the win over the final two stages.  Maguire reported no troubles in his Impreza while Adrian McElvaney was third quickest on an 8.15.  Adrian definitely getting into his stride but is still struggling with a wonky gear box.

2wd sensation Gary McPhillips continues to fly in his Mk2 and got his clutch problems sorted in service.  McPhillips took another three seconds from Maurice Moffett, Maurice just shaking his head and admits that he has no answer to McPhillip’s pace.  Russell Woods has been running strongly all day but is still suffering with exhaust problems in his Mk2 but despite this him, Damien Gallagher and Manus Kelly are all still battling over just a couple of seconds in every stage.

In GpN Alan Ring has a commanding lead but the Munster Joinery man blotted his copy book with a spin at a tight hairpin in stage seven dropping at least twenty seconds.  Willie Fannin continue to set the faster GpN times in his Impreza but following his six minute puncture this morning he is well out of the picture.

Other stories include Jock Maguire in his yellow Escort Cosworth stripped reverse gear after an overshoot this morning and has been running without any means of going backwards, co driver Duncan McFarlane has a big sign on his lap “no reverse please push” that sort of says it all.

The reason for Triton man Keven Barrett’s retirement was he punctured in the same place as this morning and decided it was better not to carry on.  Across the water on the Jim Clark Eamon Boland has scored another Tarmac win by just 3.1 seconds from Tim McNulty with Gareth MacHale rounding off the top three.  Last year’s Cavan rally winner Aaron MacHale retired on the final stage with a broken steering arm.
