Patrick Elliott saw Rally leader Niall Maguire pull away ever so slightly as the Cavan building contractor suffered a puncture on stage four dropping at least 20 seconds and also allowing Michael Barrable to move into second.  Patrick felt that he picked too soft a tyre for that loop and when he was informed that the Cavan sunshine had now raised temperatures to over 20 degrees it confirmed his fears.  Niall Maguire hit a bump or a rock on the left hand side of the car and was convinced that he would have punctured but it turned out not to be the case but Niall admitted that his confidence was not so high for the rest of the stage.  Michael Barrable reported no troubles at the service in control unlike Adrian McElvaney who was having all sorts of problems in his Impreza.  The Monaghan man was having to contend with a sticking throttle which of course is not funny in a 300 BHP machine, Adrian saying “if it could go wrong today it has, we even got a puncture on a road section”.

Major retirements include Triton man Kevin Barrett who had shown so strongly this morning is reportedly stopped up a slip road in stage five.  Seamus Leonard eventually drove into service in his Impreza but didn’t check in at the control.

GpN continues to be led by Alan Ring who reckons he chose to hard a tyre for that loop of stages and will almost certainly go down one grade for the final loop of three tests.  The other top GpN runners took a bit of a hammering with both Fergal Costello and Danny McBride retiring on what is reported to be an oil spill but this is very much unconfirmed.  Moving into the GpN picture is Trevor Bustard who is just outside the top ten on a total of 56.43.

The 2wd battle is still going Gary McPhillip’s way but the Monaghan man admitted to having no clutch in his Mk2 but he is still a remarkable fifth overall.  Maurice Moffett has no answer to McPhillip’s pace but he has now edged ahead of Manus Kelly and lies a strong sixth.   Des Moore had been making a strong return to rallying and was up into the top 15 but he is reportedly stopped in stage six.  The two rallying co drivers Arthur Kierans and Damien Connolly are having a ball in their Mk2 and are now well into the top 15 on a total of 57.43.
