Local Rally Ace Patrick Elliott flew through the opening 14.30 Kms Kill Stage stopping the clocks in 8.11 minutes 7 seconds faster than second placed man Kevin Barrett.  Elliott was comfortable with his pace but did say that a few places were very slippy and almost overcooked it a couple of times.  Second on the road is Niall Maguire who slotted into third nine seconds down on the leader, Niall reckoned that he had a good run but that maybe his tyres had gone slightly off toward the end of the stage.  The big drama of the opening test was third on the road man Seamus Leonard who got himself stuck at a junction.  Seamus was a bit disheartened at the stage finish and told us “I picked too hard a tyre and coming down into a junction it just spun around on me and I could not get it going again”.  Seamus dropped over a minute with this incident, his stage time 9.27.  Worst affected was Michael Barrable who was stuck behind Leonard for what he reckoned was at least 20 seconds and that would bear some truth in his stage time of 8.37.

Rodney Wilton had a fantastic run through the opening stage to lead the 2wd battle and he of course is a very impressive fourth overall.  Gary McPhillips felt his Escort was very sluggish at the start of the stage and this almost certainly cost him a few seconds but the engine cleared itself and he set a good time of 8.40 to lie 2nd 2wd and sixth overall.  Maurice Moffett is going equally well and tied with McPhillips, the Monaghan engineer absolutely loving the very technical roads outside Cootehill in his little flying Starlett.

The first major retirement looks to be Adrian McElvaney who is reportedly stopped before the start of the first stage so the assumption is that his Impreza WRC has suffered some kind of mechanical failure.  Adrian was full of enthusiasm this morning and explained the reason for being so far off the pace in Monaghan was a drive shaft problem that has since been sorted.

In GpN Willie Fannin set the pace from Alan Ring just five seconds separating these two, Danny McBride is just off the leaderboard on 8.52 to lie fourth in GpN behind Sean Flannagan.  Fergal Costello was settling into his new Lancer and set a time of 9.10 while Eamon Daly in his Lancer had an overshoot and stopped the clocks on a 9.08.
