Former National Champion Niall Maguire and his co driver Paul McLaughlin were first on the road on this Circuit of Munster Rally, and when Niall brought his Subaru to a halt after the opening stage he admitted. “I was too cautious”.

Patrick Elliott felt he was being slow as well but the clocks certainly said otherwise. The following drivers reported no problems at all, everyone seemed to be enjoying the warm sunshine bathed fast tarmac stage. Kevin Barrett said he kept it very safe in the stage. While Noel Redmond commented. “I was steady, there is a lot of time to be made in there. I enjoyed it”.

Eamonn Daly was fastest of the group N drivers and he said his car is really performing well, some troubles he had been having with the ECU now behind him. Alan Ring found the stage a bit dusty. Willie Fannin lost time when he slid his Impreza on at a junction. Anthony O’Halloran said he was a bit slow “to get into it”.

As ever the race between the Mk2 Escorts was intense, and as can be seen above, Paul Purtill and Ed O’Callaghan were equal fastest.

Just outside the leading times Willie Fannin recorded a 5.57. Fergal Costello 6.09. Andrew Purcell 6.02 and Mike Quinn 6.05. Andrew Purcell felt that he had never driven so badly. Ed O’Callaghan had some brake troubles.

Looking further afield – Kris Meeke is leading the Barbados Rally by 52s starting Day 2. Kris is finding the going tricky and has had a couple of spins. His main opposition was Paul Bourne and he has rolled his car over the finish of stage 4.

Finally for now – congratulation to John Quinn (Car 71 Vauxhall Chevette). John became a grandfather 2 weeks ago – twins – one of each!

More news later.
