RALLY NEWS No.5 - Sligp Park After SS8 - Tuesday @ 16:15:10

RALLY NEWS NO.5 Sligo Park Hotel/Sunday 5.30
UNOFFICIAL LEADERBOARD AFTER STAGE 8 Dough Mountain
1st (1) Adrian McElvaney/Paul Kelly (Impreza WRC) 1.19.19
2nd (3) Sean Gallagher/Enda Sherry (Impreza WRC) 1.19.56
3rd (26) Steve Simpson/Andrew Roughead (Accent WRC) 1.22.25
4th (24) Terence O'Shaughnessy/Eugene McGrath (Corolla) 1.22.33
5th (11) John & Caroline Price (Metro 6R4) 1.22.35
6th (4) David Mann/Alun Cook (Impreza WRC) 1.23.22
7th (16) Fergal Costello/Shane Gilhooley (Lancer N) 1.23.29
8th (23) Eugene Ferry/Derek Heena (Escort) 1.23.50
9th (15) Paul Kiely/Pat McSharry (Lancer N) 1.23.54
10th (21) John Gallagher/Tomas Maguire (Lancer N) 1.24.34

Adrian McElvaney had to give best to Sean Gallagher through stage 7, Kings Mountain, where Gallagher was 6s faster than his Subaru rival. Through stage 8 however McElvaney pulled out all the stops and was 12s quicker than Gallagher to leave Adrian with a 37s lead and just the Keelogyboy Mountain stage remaining.

There was a major change in the leaderboard when 3rd placed Daniel McKenna crashed his Escort on a square right junction in stage 8, Dough Mountain. Reportedly the car is heavily damaged and co driver Andrew Grennan has been taken to hospital to receive treatment for a leg injury. This was an unfortunate end to a very fine drive from the 21 year old Monaghan man.

A further major change to the leaderboard was that Steve Simpson got his Hyundai WRC ahead of John Price’s Metro 6R4, this being of real significance in terms of the MSA Asphalt Championship. Sandwiched between these 2 visiting crews is Terence O’Shaughnessy in his Corolla, Terence setting some dazzling times over the last few stages as he becomes tuned in to the new 2.5 Millington engine in his Toyota. David Mann has pulled out the stops to come from 25th following his turbo pipe problems on the opening stages to hold a solid 6th.

In Group N Fergal Costello continues to lead with Paul Kiely 2nd and not making any real impression on Fergal’s times. John Gallagher is up into 3rd in group N. Eugene Ferry is holding on to 8th despite a chronic misfire with his Escort through stage 6. The reason for Trevor Mulligan losing so much time through stage 6 was that a spark plug burned out on his Escort. He is now very far back but still going. John Cairns is lying just outside the top 10 in his group A Impreza, John not having done any recce at all which is pretty good going.

Some class leaders leaving service after stage 6 included Peter Hughes who led cl.13 from Samuel Kelso with Mervyn Deane 3rd in that class and in the running for the special McAree Engineering Border C/ship Trophy. Daniel McKenna did lead class 12 with Daniel Conaghan 2nd but of course McKenna has now retired. Adrian Cannon (Civic) led class 2. Roger Kennedy who is well placed in the Border series led class 7 in his Peugeot. Pakie Duffy (Civic) led class 3. Ruari Maguire (Civic) led class 6 and Thomas Carolan led cl.9 in his Escort. John Kelly (Corolla) led class 10.
