Fastest through the Drumnahoe stage was Desi Henry, with Jonny Greer a couple of seconds further back. This does not alter the positions at the front with Keith Cronin holding the lead of well over a minute from Fredrik Alhin. Rally leader Keith reported from the end of Drumnahoe that the roads were dry and he had difficulty in finding a good pace. Second placed Fredrik Alhin paid great complements to the mechanics for fixing the car up after his previous accident and he did say also that he is getting confidence on these Ulster roads. Jonny Greer seemed surprised to have set such a quick time while Desi Henry told us that his Skoda seems better set up for the dry roads. Desi did have one scare in the stage when he clouted the front wheel of his Fabia against the scenery. Sam Moffett says that he is just trying to get the car to the finish now. His position in the tarmac championship is perhaps not as clear as we thought as the bonus points on the final round only seem to apply if a driver has missed a round, but Sam hasn’t.
Joe McGonigle is hanging on to his top ten placing, the Donegal man reporting that he gave himself a fright on that stage as through a series of bends he arrived at the last one too fast and his Fabia scooted up and down a bank.
In the national section Alan Carnmichael is keeping the hammer down in his Mini WRC and is taking chunks of time out of the cars in front. It would be touch and go though if Alan can get back into the lead of the nationals. Who has taken the lead though is Kevin Eves in his Corolla. He has squeezed ahead of Camillus Bradley by 8 seconds. Kevin has a bit of a quandary as to whether to push hard or not as if he gets a decent finish here he wins the modified section of the Clonakility Black Pudding championship.
There is a big race going on in GpN between Willie Mavitty and Gavin Kelly, both in Lancers and separated by just 5.6 seconds. Paul Britton had been flying in the GpN category but his Subaru has succumbed to broken transmission. Further important retirements include Matt Edwards’ Fiesta has stopped in stage 12 with mechanical problems. Osian Pryce’s similar car lay down in stage 11 with fuel starvation. The reason for Michael Dunlop’s retirement is that his Escort went off the road. Kyle White retired in stage 11 with a broken water pump. Eugene Meegan’s BMW went into a field in stage 10 and got stuck.
In the historic section Barry Jones leads H1 from Stanley Orr. Keith McIvor leads H2 despite his Escort having a puncture in stage 12. In the R2 category William Creighton has a decent lead on James Wilson in 2nd and Oscar Solberg has now come into third.
