Despite the difficult conditions the top drivers made it through the last few stages unscathed. Desi Henry had a bit in hand at the end and was able to drive with caution to win by 12.6s from Marty McCormack. Marty was fastest on the last stage by quite a bit. Desi Henry commented here at the champagne finish in the lovely grounds of Loughry College. ‘I had nothing to gain on the last stage. I really enjoyed the day although it was very slippy at the end I still felt comfortable’. Marty McCormack was pleased with his day as well, a great warm up for the Ulster Rally and well settled into his new car. Peadar Hurson commented that the last 3 stages were very difficult for him as he was running on slick tyres, but otherwise glad to get a rally in the car under his belt. Kenny McKinstry said it was very muddy and slippy towards the end and he just concentrated on keeping things steady. Kenny’s co driver from years ago Robbie Philpott said he really enjoyed the day, is heading back to the US on Monday and this is definitely his last rally.
Young Phillip Allen drove well today to finish 4th and his co driver Eugene Donnelly commented. ‘It was as very sensible mature drive. He has got lots of talent’. William Creighton takes the F2 spoils and the Finaghy man commented. ‘It was a challenging day but a great warm up for the Ulster Rally and that was the point of the exercise.’ Niall Devine has won group N and he had a 33s lead on his closest rival Clive Kilpatrick going into stage 8 but then Clive’s Lancer had an excursion into a field to put Devine’s GpN supremacy beyond doubt.
We are still waiting for times for the Historic categories and it would appear that Stanley Orr has won the Class 11 section of the Historics and Raymond Johnston cl.12.
