On stage 2, Drumcairn, Desi Henry set a cracking pace to make fastest time and move into the lead of this Enda McNulty Motors Tyrone Stages Rally. Marty McCormack was fastest on SS3 but by only a hair’s breadth. Following Derek McGarrity’s retirement on stage 1 we got news then that Alan Carmichael’s similar Subaru had given up the ghost on stage 2, reportedly with engine problems.
Desi Henry commented here at Loughry service: ‘So far so good’. Marty McCormack said. ‘Settling in nicely, taking it up step by step, keeping smooth lines. This is a brand new car and my confidence is slowly coming back’. Peadar Hurson observed. ‘We are on a learning curve with the car. It is starting to feel really good, although the handbrake is not working and that cost us a few seconds on stage 2.’ Kenny McKinstry told us that his Subaru was in a hedge several times on the second stage, he found no grip and the road was muddy, so he took it carefully in stage 3’. Jonny Greer reckoned the stages are very tricky and he is being relatively careful. Phillip Allen was right on the pace through the opening stage but on the third stage, on a 3 left tightens the Mini WRC got away from him and spun and stalled. He dropped approximately 19s.
Niall Devine reported clipping a rock at a crossroads, fortunately with no damage and he still leads group N. The two young drivers, William Creighton and Calvin Beattie, Peugeot 208 and Opel Adam respectively, are now in 12th and 13th places, split by just 1s. Kyle White in his Peugeot R2 is a further 3s back. News of a further retirement is that Marty Toner’s Sunbeam has cried enough, what with frontal damage and a misfire. Car 85, Paddy Quinn is another retirement, his Escort Mk1 developing engine trouble.
