Niall Maguire was fastest on the second stage to reinforce his quickest time on the opening test and lead the rally here at service by 5s. It is not a lot, and as the roads dry Patrick Elliott can expect to bring the superior force of his latest model Impreza to bear and go for some fastest times. The one cloud hanging over Elliott’s head is that there is a question mark over his start time on the first stage. Hopefully that will be resolved. Patrick also said that his Impreza felt a little “loose” over those first 2 stages so the engineers will try and adjust the suspension here at service. Niall Maguire’s Subaru was showing signs of a few scrapes down the sides and he said that some of the baled chicanes are very tight.

Aaron MacHale dropped a few seconds on the 2nd stage when he had a slight overshoot and stall at a square left otherwise OK. PJ McGrath said he is having a terrible run, possibly a bad tyre choice, he was going to have to explore the options at service. David James was another who made a wrong tyre choice and it has cost him time.

In Group N Eamonn Daly got his car sorted between stages 1 and 2 when he replaced a turbo pipe and he had a good time through that 2nd stage, Lisnamuck, but he will be hard pressed now to pull back the almost 2m that he lost on the opening stage. Alan Ring had a good run, his total now 18.52.4. Keith Cronin’s co driver Greg Shinnors said. “The 2nd stage was better for us, the suspension is still a bit soft but we’re here to learn asphalt rallying”. Greg finished off by saying “It’s great to be rallying here at home in Ireland, everyone is so friendly”. Keith’s times not only put him at the top of the group N ladder here today but also 6th o/a. Danny Barry is 2nd in group N and Alan Ring 3rd. Sean Flanagan in his GpN Subaru reckoned he had picked too soft a compound rear tyre and his total now is 19.05.1. Anthony O’Halloran in his Lancer is on 19.13.5.

In the race for best 2 wheel drive honours Maurice Moffett turned in a brilliant time for stage 2 to edge ahead of Trevor Mulligan. Maurice joked that he got up an hour earlier this morning and really went for it on the stages. Mulligan who was fastest 2 wheel drive on the first stage made a mess of a square right corner, stalled the engine and lost quite a few seconds. Terence O’Shaughnessy in the Corolla feels the handling of the car still isn’t right but he still had a real go in stage 2 and was 2nd fastest two wheel drive. John Morris who rolled his Escort Cosworth on the Mourne Rally reports a slipping clutch in the car this morning. Shay Power had two spins. Damien Gallagher is setting good times but he also has a query over a stage start. Darragh O’Riordan retired with clutch problems on this S1600 machine and the Roche brothers went off the road into a garden on the first loop. Andrew Bushe is leading the Super 1600s in his Saxo, 7s up on Mark Sheahan. The first two Citroen C2R2 Cup contenders in so far show Paul Manton almost 20s up on Martin Tynan, Martin having suffered a spin.
