Glengormley`s Derek McGarrity, co-driven by Tralee man Diarmuid Falvey, scored a brilliant victory here today on this Tour of the Sperrins Rally. NI Champion Derek extends his lead in this year`s McGrady Insurance backed Championship. This is McGarrity`s 5th Sperrins victory, while for Diarmuid Falvey this is his first time here. Nice to start with a win! Desi Henry, with Cork man Liam Moynihan co-driving, was a gallant 2nd while Derek McGeehan, with Arthur Kierans in the hot seat of his Mini WRC was a fine 3rd at the end. When McGarrity climbed out of his Subaru at the regroup before the Maghera finish he said to Clerk of the Course Stephen O`Neill. `A very good rally. I was a bit cautious with my tyres over the last 2 stages in case it rained, but it was fantastic to drive. Like being on gravel at times, real ballsy stages`. If anything Desi Henry looked slightly disappointed at the end and he said. `Loved the rally. The car never missed a beat but it is now quite old and it is hard to match the newer machinery`. Paddy McVeigh was having a real charge towards the end, but then stalled his Subaru and dropped from 4th to 5th, allowing Marty McCormack to move ahead of him.
Scottish visitor David Bogie finished 6th and he also stalled his Fiesta R5+ on the penultimate stage, but commented at the end. `No matter, I love rallying in Ireland`. Some further stories include. Adrian Hetherington`s Escort stopped on the penultimate stage with suspected broken right suspension. Frank Kelly was cautious with his tyre choice over the last few stages and won the 2-wheel drive category by 16s from Camillus Bradley. Jon Armstrong was the best R2 finisher, 17s up on Rob Duggan at the finish. Jon commented. `I was trying to judge the rally and not do anything stupid. I reckon it was a good drive all round`. Rob Duggan seemed a bit disappointed as he embarked on the long trip back to Killarney tonight, he said. `We had a good run but maybe just a small bit down on power to the Peugeot`.
Group N is looking like a close run result. Clive Kilpatrick appeared to be heading for the Production car win, but his Lancer clipped a bale on the final stage and he lost a few seconds. This may open the door for Colm McFall or Matthew McGaffin, but they are running further back and we do not have times for them as yet.
