Patrick Elliott, co-driven for the first time by Damien Connolly, was fastest through the opening stage of this Loughrea Plant backed Galway Summer Rally, while Niall Maguire was a further 3s down and Melvyn Evans a further 7 back.

There was early drama when both Eamonn Daly and Trevor Mulligan crashed out on that opening 13.7km Killbeg stage. Although the sun was starting to shine nicely over the Galway and Mayo countryside when the cars tackled the first stage, there was still some sign of dampness under the trees and the drivers mostly remarked on it being quite slippy.

Patrick Elliott commented. “I think I was a little bit conservative when I made the notes because it was so wet. It is still a bit slippy but I can afford to up the speed a little bit”. Niall Maguire reckoned that he was losing a few seconds out of the junctions compared to Elliott but otherwise went well. Having said that Niall was sweating hard and obviously flat out to try and beat Elliott today. It is real big competition between these two. If Patrick does win today he will tie up the Dunlop series.

Melvyn Evans, with RT Communications man Sean Mullally on the pace notes, was a little disappointed to be down on time on the two cars in front and Melvyn commented that he didn’t seem to be getting much grip, found it very slippy, perhaps he had picked too soft a compound tyre.

Trevor Mulligan has reportedly crashed his Escort off the road after the crossroads in that stage 1, Trevor and co driver Lisa Roe both reported to be OK. Eamonn Daly has apparently crashed his Lancer through a wall in the stage, happily Eamonn and his co driver Kevin Synott, none the worse for wear. When Maurice Moffett came to the stage finish he said. “Glad to be here”. Maurice was first on the scene of both the Daly and Mulligan accidents and may have lost a few seconds, certainly Maurice was a bit shaken up about the accidents.

Looking outside the Galway Summer Rally Sebastien Loeb came from 4th to 1st on the Rally New Zealand to strengthen his grip on the world rally championship. Czech driver Prokup won the Product6ion category.
