Patrick Elliott powered his Subaru through to fastest times on stages 3 and 4 to extend his lead to almost 20s over Niall Maguire here at service. Patrick told us that everything went well, the roads had tried out a little but were still damp and he expected this afternoon’s stages to be approximately 40 per cent wetter. This means a bit of work for the Robbie McGurk Motorsport team cutting slots in the tyres to cope with the wet weather. Niall Maguire admitted that there were places over the last couple of stages where he was being just a bit cautious. That is probably perfectly understandable considering his accident in Galway a couple of weeks ago.

Kevin Barrett in 3rd place seems to he hitting a real good pace. Kevin has changed his fuel supplier and clicked the timing up a little on his Subaru which has meant a bit more power and he is almost having to re-learn the car in that there are places where he can be a gear higher. Anthony O’Halloran continues to lead group N, the Ruan man giving a wry smile when he said. “We’re well switched on now”. Which was an oblique reference to him forgetting to switch on the differentials earlier on. One of Anthony’s big rivals for group N would have been Eamonn Daly/Anthony O’Conaill, but they have crashed their hired Garry Jennings’ Lancer on a big jump just before the end of stage 4. Maurice Moffett/Enda Sherry were first on the scene and they stopped their Starlet and undid their own seat belts and were just climbing out when Eamonn and Anthony sort of emerged from the wreckage and said they were unhurt. This allowed Maurice & Enda to continue but they dropped at least 15s in the process. Maurice does however still lead the 2 wd category.

Donegal man Danny McBride is up into 2nd in group N and Alan Ring is 3rd. Thomas Fitzmaurice despite being a little unhappy with the handling of his Lancer following suspension damage this morning is lying 4th in the category. Ian Barrett has shaken off the rust and set a very good time for stage 4 and is looking fairly strong in 5th position in GpN.

Mike Moloney/Marie Casey are 2nd in the 2 wheel drive race and that was despite losing some time in stage 3 when they spun the “rorty” rotary engined Escort. Paul Purtill has been having a few brake problems with his Escort and his total is now 32.45. Mike Quinn is on 33.10. Fintan Canty 33.43. Gary Reidy & Diarmuid Falvey have crashed their Escort very heavily in stage 3. Driver and co driver are reportedly unhurt, they were lying in the top 10 up to that. Jack & Paul Maguire lost some time when their yellow Escort Cosworth broke a drive shaft. John McKeown was forced to pull out following the gearbox trouble in his Escort Cosworth.
