At the end of this first day the competition in both the Ulster Rally for the Tarmac Championship contenders and for the BRC NI Rally is extremely tight at the top. Garry Jennings is just 11s ahead of Derek McGarrity in the Ulster Rally. Jennings admitted that he had a big moment on the spectator stage but he hand braked the car rather than hit the front and he said. `It just broke away`. Even more importantly for Garry was the fact that his Impreza brakes more or less failed towards the end of that final stage of the day. Ironically, he was asking his rival Derek McGarrity if he had a set of seals in his service van so that the mechanics could get to work. McGarrity admitted that his launch control problem on stage 5 was down to himself and not the car. He went on to say. `I fluffed the next couple of miles because of it but the stages tomorrow will suit me better with tight and technical roads. I am not going to make Garry`s life easy`. Third placed Donagh Kelly was a lot more on the pace over the last couple of stages and still feels that he is not completely confident in the left hand drive situation.

In Group N Stephen Wright had a really good final few stages this evening to eke out a very small advantage on Josh Moffett. Josh`s Lancer had been in a hedge for a few seconds. One of the main stories this evening was that Sam Moffett, joint 2nd in the Tarmac C/ship starting the day, has retired his Subaru following his stage 5 gearbox dramas.

There was dramas as well in the BRC Rally NI when Tom Cave, who had led from the start, put his Citroen in a ditch on the last Friday stage. This leaves 20 year old Osian Pryce leading overnight. The young Welshman has had a really good run so far and is hoping to keep that momentum going. BRC C/ship points leader Korhonen has improved from 11th to 2nd. His times are now very similar to Pryce`s so unless Pryce makes a mistake it is hard to see the Finnish driver Korhonen closing in on the lead. Young Jon Armstrong is still the talk of the rally. He has again set another couple of fastest times even though his Fiesta R2 was on intermediate tyres that lost their edge a little in the dry conditions. It is back to Kesh tonight for Jon to sleep in his own bed and hopefully resume this level of performance over Saturday`s 8 stages. Not so happy was Norwegian driver Steve Rokland who lost time with a puncture on stage 7. Joe McGonigle was another to suffer a puncture, his in stage 6.

In the Historic category Wesley Patterson leads from Gareth James with Ryan Barrett 3rd. In the double header Challenge Rally Ross Hunter has won the first leg from Galway`s Dean Rafferty. In the National Rally following the spectator stage Derek McGeehan led from Paddy McVeigh. Emma McKinstry was 3rd and Jonny Leonard 4th.
