Garry Jennings and his co driver Michael Moran opened their scoring with a fastest time. Garry said. `We were a bit untidy. This is a big car on narrow tracks.` Kenny McKinstry is always reckoned to be the Lurgan Park master but he had a minor worry just as the cars crossed the ramp as there was a problem with co-driver Claire Gamble`s helmet. That was sorted but could have been a contributory factor to Kenny`s comment at stage finish. `We were a bit hesitant to start especially over the gravel section`. Denis Biggerstaff has not really rallied for a couple of years so his 3rd fastest time was quite an achievement. His son Stuart was almost 3s back and he said he was having a problem getting used to the gear change on the Metro. Stuart was looking for the paddles as per the Subaru!

Frank Kelly and Wesley Patterson had a huge battle in their respective Mk2 Escort to finish the stage in 4th and 5th overall, just a tenth of a second separating the two. Kevin Kelleher made the trip all the way from Clonakilty in West Cork to compete here for the first time and with Martin Brady co-driving set a very respectable time and was 6th o/a. Kevin has never driven in anger on a gravel stage that makes his time pretty remarkable. Jonny Leonard was 8th fastest and reckons he was a bit untidy but otherwise OK. Emma McKinstry and Derek McGeehan tied for 9th, Emma delighted to be in the hunt, Derek admitting to being a bit conservative to start. Alan Carmichael is just outside the top 10 on a time of 2.18.8 and just did not get off to a fast start that is so important here in Lurgan Park. Ray Brammer recorded a 2.22.0 and joked. `The car is faster than I am`. The two Lotus Sunbeams of former NI Champions, Stephen Mawhinney and Mervyn Hill, finished on exactly the same time of 2.28.7. So there is quite a battle in store there. Mervyn Hill made the comment. `Let the race begin`.
