Darren Gass was able to give the suspension on his Subaru a bit of an adjustment tweak between the stages that helped to steady the car, and he was fastest through all 3 stages on the first loop. He did sustain a puncture towards the finish of the 2nd stage, Deadman’s Hill, but seemed to lose little time. His closest pursuer Derek McGarrity has lost quite a few seconds with overshoots and half spins as he settles in to his newly acquired Focus WRC. McGarrity did say. “One of the half spins was at a hairpin and I stalled the car. There was Kenny McKinstry standing laughing at me!” Paddy McVeigh has set some very good times so far to hold 3rd place. Kevin Barrett ion 4th said. “I like the stages, we are going well and it is the McGeehan man we want to be ahead of for the championship”.

Mini WRC man Derek told us. “I am footering about. The stages are narrow and technical and it is my own fault I am not faster”. David Armstrong was best of the Escorts over the initial loop, although he reckoned he had too hard a compound tyre on the front of the Escort. Interestingly, despite all this lovely weather, Frank Kelly told us. “I am finding it slippy and driving it like a wet rally. Even judging my distances under braking as I would in the wet. I think it is the dust on the road that is making it slippy, but the times are still competitive”. Keith White had an overshoot in his Mk1 Escort and lost a few seconds. George Robinson’s Lancer is giving anti lag and sticking throttle problems that is costing a lot of time. Jonny Leonard had great times through stages 1 and 2 but lost out in stage 3 when his lancer suffered a damaged driveshaft.

Rory Byrne in the Modern Tyres Lancer had some intercom troubles and his total after 3 stages is 27.16.3. Norman Armstrong took a couple of stages to settle in but is now going nicely. Alan Nesbitt who owns the petrol station just up the road from service had to nurse his Escort through the first 3 stages as the differential was singing a strange song. English visitor Ray Brammer has had a few spins and overshoots. His Subaru was off the road briefly in stage 3. Ray needs to be careful of his back that he hurt when he fell off a bar stool a few weeks ago. (He was asleep at the time!). David Crossen has retired his Escort because of lack of brakes.
Stanley Ballantine’s Lancer looked slightly wonky about the front when it arrived in here to service and Stanley told us. “I hit a bridge a wee dunt and bent my nice bonnet. Could have done without that!” Formula Karting man Jim Feenan has had a good run so far in his Escort WRC and may have moved into the top 10 with a time of 26.37.0.
