Unpredictable weather conditions made tyre choice a lottery for the top drivers. Derek McGarrity led the rally from Donagh Kelly after the first loop of stages but through stages 4 and 5 Donagh Kelly got everything just right and was 3s faster than McGarrity through stage 4, Sawel Mountain. Donegal man Donagh was then 13s faster than Derek through stage 5 to hold a lead of 9s going into the final stage.
Camillus Bradley `s times through 4 and 5 were consistently fast to reinforce his 3rd place overall. Derek McGeehan in 4th in the Mini WRC is really making no impression on the cars in front, and indeed Peadar Hurson in 5th is still trying hard and has closed the gap ever so slightly on McGeehan.
Kevin Barrett has confirmed his retirement following gearbox trouble with his Subaru. Steven Kane and James Laverty are both missing from the top runners following accidents. We reported on Trevor Ferguson going off just past Davagh Forest in stage 3. Trevor`s Impreza rolled on a very fast right over a crest jump and has extensive panel damage. Fortunately Trevor and co-driver David McElroy are unhurt.
Some of the class leaders starting the 2nd loop of stages included: Paddy McToal in his Escort who leads class 5. Kevin Bradley/Graham Henderson lead class 4. Greg McCormack, who has his 16 year old daughter Caron co-driving leads class 11. This is Caron`s first rally and Greg told us that she was a real cool young lady on the notes with no hesitations at all. Kieron Graffin/Paddy Robinson led Group N in their Lancer from Liam McFall/Ronnie Craig in a similar Mitsubishi. Colm McFall was 3rd in GpN in yet another Lancer. Eoin McGuckin led class 3 in his Escort. Alistair Cochrane led cl.6. Andy Johnson led cl.10 for Historic cars up to 1981 in his Chevette. Malcolm Pedlow was 2nd in that class in his BMW 2002 and Harry Brown & Martin McGrath were 3rd in their Avenger.
Simon Woodside/Dean Beckett retired their BMW with gearbox trouble.
