Rally leader Sam Moffett drove with great maturity through the middle loop of stages. The CombiLift man had dry weather race tyres on his Subaru and of course the rain came down quite heavily through stage 5 and half way through stage 6. Sam had the presence of mind to back off and then as the roads dried he really speeded up to set fastest time through stage 6. Declan Boyle was leading the rally starting SS5 but he was badly caught out when he reached down for the wiper switch in his Subaru going into what he described as `a silly square left`. The car slid off into the scenery and got stuck for the best part of 5 minutes. Declan is still going and set a good time through stage 6 but is well down the order. Darragh O1Riordan now holds 2nd place but the young Midleton plant hire man is feeling very unwell and is possibly not going to continue.
In the battle of the Escorts Frank Kelly told us that he drove stage 6 like a forestry road, as much sideways as forwards and recorded a really good time to jump up the leaderboard. Gary McPHillips has parked his Escort somewhere around stage 5. In Group N Josh Moffett turned in a scorcher of a time through 5 to move into the GpN lead. Martin Doherty had led the category but lost a few seconds with an overshoot in the rain. Martin fought back though 6 and is now just a second in arrears of Josh.
Roy White managed to reach service despite his MG S2000 having broken a drive shaft. Roy explained that it was a downhill right 3/left 3 and hairpin right. He did a wall of death act around the hairpin because it looked like a nice soft bank, but the stress of it all was too much for the drive shaft! Engineer Tom Gahan is currently fitting a new shaft so hopefully all will be well for the final loop. Declan Gallagher has been setting some good times in his rear wheel drive Starlet but the engine of the car seems to be going off song and he is losing a bit of momentum. Young Richard Moffett is still having a very good run in his Starlet and is currently 11th. James Belton in the Subaru WRC admitted to a very cautious start to the day but his times have been gradually improving and he is now in the top 10. Tommy Doyle has got the handling sorted on his Clio and is now up to 14th o/a and leading class 7. Declan Boyle is 15th.
