The second run through the Ring stage changed the face of the rally as Brian O`Mahony powered his Subaru through the test 12s faster than Denis Cronin to move into an 8s lead. There are 2 stages remaining and if O`Mahony keeps at the pace he has shown all day to day West Cork victory be surely be his. Owen Murphy is holding on to his brilliant 3rd place and driving conservatively now for a finish. O`Mahony has had various little adjustments to his Subaru over the course of the rally and he really seems to have got to grips with the car, although he did report some understeer through the Ring stage. Kenny McKinstry, who runs the car, found the front tyre pressures to be a little high and he was adjusting that the roadside. Similarly Denis Cronin was found to have too much pressure in his Subaru tyres but really Denis seemed to have no answer to O`Mahony`s speed through the stage.
Daragh O`Riordan has tried various adjustments to his Fiesta WRC throughout the rally and for the afternoon stages he is trying a softer spring and a harder compound tyre. Daragh has also found some improvement with different brake pads. Perhaps one of the biggest differences between the Fiesta WRC and the Subaru WRC is that the Fiesta is around 14mph top speed shy of the bigger engined car.
In the battle for 2 wheel drive honours John Dalton in his Darrian was 10s faster than Frank Kelly through Ring which leaves Dalton 15s to the good in overall terms. Jason Ryan in the Starlet has gone very well over today1s stages and he has now moved into the top 10 just ahead of Stephen Carey in the Civic.
In overall terms the rally is the opening round of the Southern 4 Championship. The series now has a new sponsor – PlasticBags.ie. Interestingly, the principal of the company Sean O`Carroll is competing on the rally in his beautiful red Escort
