When Denis Cronin brought his Subaru into service at Tossie Hayes Caravan Park in Owenahincha he said. `This car is so nice to drive you would not even know you were going fast.` Certainly Denis has turned in a masterful performance over this opening loop of stages. Second placed Owen Murphy is not hanging about either to have his GpN Lancer ahead of three World Rally Cars. Owen said. `That is the best I have ever driven and we caught and passed the Darrian in there`. As it turns out John Dalton`s Darrian had suffered a puncture in stage 2 and had to do all of stage 3 on a space saver tyre. Brian O`Mahony down in 4th in the new WRC S14 Impreza lost time at the start of stage 3 with a stall, Brian also has a worry over the rear differential of the car and to cap it all there was some smoke inside the car. After stage 1 we had Brian in 2nd place but his time was subsequently amended so he led the rally after stage 1 and was 2nd after stage 2.

Daragh O`Riordan is in 4th place with his Fiesta WRC and reckoned the suspension was just a little bit hard on the car and he also had some intercom problems. It is all part and parcel of a brand new car and Daragh is gradually sorting things out.

Adrian Hetherington is fastest of the Escorts, having a really good run but told us he is not saying anything until the rally is over in case he spoils his luck! John Cope did well to be 9th o/a despite some intercom problems and also picking too hard a compound tyre. Frank Kelly said he just has not got into the rythm. Ed O`Callaghan made a wrong tyre choice. Pat O`Connell clipped a chicane and also has brake fade on every stage. Kevin O`Donoghue picked too soft a compound tyre and lost a lot of time. Wesley Patterson is having clutch problems with his beautiful Escort and is also losing time. Brian O`Keefe is in a sparkling new Mk15 Impreza Group N and in his own words. `We are bedding it in very slowly. We do not want to scrape it`.
