James Stafford/Amy Ryan in their Darrian showed everyone a clean pair of heels today by taking fastest time on every stage and winning by 52s from Roy White/Martin Brady in their MG S2000. No.1 seed Alan Ring and his co driver Adrian Deasy brought their Group N Lancer into 3rd o/a following a trouble free run. There were dramas the whole way through the event today, not the least of which was Colm Murphy/Don Montgomery retiring their GpN Impreza on the penultimate stage with a gearbox problem. Murphy was 5th o/a on the rally and in line to win the Top Part West Coast C/ship, but that was not to be.

This left Frank Kelly/Liam Brennan in their famous blue Escort the Top Part West Coast Champions. It could so easily have been a different story as Kelly was distracted by the crashed OO BMW of Mike O`Leary and very nearly parked beside the marooned BMW. Somehow Kelly got going without too much of a time loss. There was a tremendous sporting repartee between Frank Kelly and Colm Murphy and neither wanted the other to lose on a misfortune. Then rallying is an unpredictable game. Frank did say at the Banna Beach finish ramp. “I would not have wished that on Colm for anything, but with a face as ugly as mine you need a bit of luck now and again. I have to say that the stages today were very exhilarating”. In a last minute change to the results Frank Kelly was moved from 4th to 6th which means Ed Synan now wins Cl.14.

Further retirements towards the end of the day included Barry Ryan losing a top 6 placing when his Cl.11 Escort engine cried enough. The Escort of Frank Sweeney suffered a leaking oil cooler and had to be retired. Tommy mason retired his hired Escort with coil pack trouble. Eddie Power pulled his Corolla out of the race when it developed a oil or a water leak.

Roy White/Martin Brady were best class 15 finishers and indeed probably the thing that pleased Roy most was just to finish the rally problem free in his MG S2000. Roy did have a small drama when he pulled into the ditch to squeeze past the Murphy Impreza and damaged the exhaust. But that was not the fault of the car! Alan Ring was best Group N. John Hendy in his Corolla has won Cl.13 and Cal McCarthy Cl.11F.

With 2 stages remaining David and Rita Dee in their Mini Cooper were lying 1st in class 17 for the Historics. Philip McKibbin in his Cortina was lying 2nd in cl.18 to Denis Collins in his Escort.

Finally for now very well done to CoC Jakes Kelly, Richard Talbot and all the hard working Kerry MC team for putting on such a good rally today. The popularity of the rally speaks for itself. Many thanks to everyone who supported and helped with our RallyNews service.
