For Cork 20 winners Daragh ORiordan and his co driver Tony McDaid in their Subaru Impreza WRC S12B today was an end of season high speed celebratory victory here on the Fastnet Rally. ORiordan was virtually unopposed throughout the day and scored fastest time on every stage. Denis Cronin was making a push to close the 1m8s gap between himself and the leader, but Denis unfortunately put his Subaru off the road on stage 7. Stage 6 did not run because of an accident on the previous loop. Michael OBrien/Patrick Walsh made the trip from the UK here to Bantry worthwhile by taking a fine 5th place in their Focus WRC. They did appear to be heading for 2nd o/a but dropped some time on the final stage with an as yet unspecified mechanical gremlin. This let Alan Ring/Adrian Deasy into the runner-up spot and Group N winners in their Lancer.

Damien McCarthy, co driven by Eamonn Hayes, in his Civic, proved once again what a fine young driver he is by taking the final podium place and class 11 victory. Brendan Cumiskey recovered well from his stage 5 mishap and produced a couple of very quick times, faster than both Alan Ring and Damien McCarthy, but could not re-capture the earlier time loss and had to settle for 4th place. Similarly Fergus OMeara was very fast over the final couple of stages but could not overhaul Wesley Patterson in the race for best Escort and finished 2s behind Lisburn man Patterson. Jer ODonovan came into 3rd GpN, 8th o/a. We mentioned earlier that Allan Treacy had put his Corolla off the road on stage 5, but we got our Corollas mixed – it was the John Hendy example that was off the road. Alan Treacy finished well, just outside the top ten, provisionally 11th o/a and 2nd in Class 13. Wesley Patterson has won Cl.13.

Following the penultimate stage Vincent McSweeney in his Civic was leading the Junior category from Diarmuid OCrowley in his Nova with Andrew Beamish in another Nova 3rd. David Cremin in his Mk1 Escort led the Historics after SS7 from Noel Hurley (Saab).

Finally for now many thanks to all those who supported and helped with the RallyNews service. Special thanks to Martin Walsh for all his help and thanks also to Dougie Hughes and Angus Sealy. Well done to Clerk of the Course Ger Hayes and all the hard working and enthusiastic team from Skibbereen & District MC and further afield as well. Great to be in Bantry!
