Midleton’s Daragh ORiordan looked relatively unruffled when he brought his Subaru to the finish of stage 2. Daragh and his co driver Tony McDaid are of course very match fit, following their Cork 20 win. Daragh told us that he was careful through the first stage and his tyres would not warm up enough. He put a few cuts in the rubber for stage 2 and they worked well. He was 17s faster than the tying Denis Cronin and Kevin Kelleher through that 15.1km 2nd stage. The stage is named “Sam Maguire” as that is the birthplace of the legend, up in the foothills above Dunmanway.

Denis Cronin reported that he had a good run through that second stage but that he had semi-wet weather tyres fitted that were ideal for the opening stage but the tarmac was bone dry on stage 2. All the top cars received a standard time through stage 1 following Brian OMahony’s accident. Kevin Kelleher said after stage 2. “I found it very greasy but everything is going well”. Michael OBrien in the Focus WRC said he took it fairly steady. Damien McCarthy in his Civic had much the same sentiment and told us. “Nothing crazy so far”.

Fergus OMeara brought his immaculate Escort into the service and said. “We were conservative in our tyre choice and also lost a few seconds behind John Hendy’s Corolla”. When Hendy appeared he explained that the rear shock absorber mounting on his Twin Cam had broken and he had to back off.

Fastest group N so far is Brendan Cumiskey who is 4s up on Alan Ring in his similar Lancer. Ring’s car has a new engine and gearbox fitted following all the problems over the last year. Alan said the car seems to be going really well and his only problem in stage 2 was one of vision – he had to take one of his contact lenses out halfway through the stage!

Cal McCarthy was going really hard this morning to hold 5th o/a. His only problem so far was an overshoot on stage 1 but of course he got the standard time for the opening test. Some further times include – Vincent OShea 11th on 21.54. Jonathan OCallaghan in his Peugeot 12th on 21.56. Stephen Hernon (Impreza) 21.56 13th. Ken Oneill 14th in his Puma on 21.58. Jer ODonovan 15th, 4th in GpN on 22.01.
