One of the most interesting battles in Irish rallying for a long time came to a halt in stage 5 when Darren Gass’s Subaru lost it’s power steering and the newly crowned Tarmac Champion Darren was forced to pull out. Darren and his co driver Enda Sherry lost 11s to Daragh O’Riordan on the opening stage, but then on the following tests Armagh man Darren made a real fight of it and reduced his deficit to 6s starting stage 5. That has all gone now and O’Riordan has 1m41s lead over 2nd placed Declan Boyle. Interestingly, the first five cars beat the allotted time for the 13.5km Killnamtra stage.

Further top retirements include Eoin Doyle in his Focus WRC and Cal McCarthy who went out when his Civic snapped a drive shaft at the start of stage 5.

In the Historic Rally after 4 stages Wesley Patterson had a 2m lead over Ray Cunningham with Brendan McAree 3rd and John Spiers in his similar Porsche 4th. Patterson is in a class K Mk2 Escort and is really out on his own. Ray Cunningham in the Mini said. “It is hard to pick the grip underneath the trees on the damp patches.”. John Spiers/Suzanne Niedrum in the green Porsche 911 crumpled the front mudguard against a chicane bale but otherwise OK. They called it an “altercation!”
