The above tines are from the first few cars only through the stage and it is very possible that later cars will come into that top 10.

Conditions were extremely wet, much standing water, giving the drivers a tough time. As can be seen above Thomas Fitzmaurice, very much on his local patch today was fastest through the opening stage. TLI man Thomas reported some brake fade with his Lancer at stage finish and before the rally he also said that he had a sleepless night as he was suffering from ‘flu.

Second fastest was Keith Cronin, the West Cork man unruffled by having a guest co-driver today in th4e shape of David Power. David has done a couple of rallies with his brother in a Darrian but he was still pretty nervous about sitting in the Lancer with Keith today.

Stuart Darcy reckoned that opening stage was just a little bit fast in places today for his GpA Subaru, but still he looked well composed at stage finish.

Anthony O’Halloran in 4th reported no problems. Alan Ring in 5th place seemed to be very relaxed and appeared to be taking no chances in the difficult conditions. Mike Quinn set a good time in his Mk2 Escort and that was despite a spin. Brian O’Mahony was driving Willie Fannin’s Group N Impreza and not his usual Clio, and he said that he was struggling a little to get used to the car and should have done more testing. His time was quite a few seconds down on the fastest group N drivers. John Hickey lost at least 30s in the stage when his Subaru windscreen completely fogged over. He commented at stage finish. “All this technology and a misted up windscreen ruined the run”.

Kevin O’Donoghue had all sorts of dramas in the stage when a nut came off part of the gear change linkage and somehow or another co driver Joe O’Leary managed to screw it together again whilst still on the move and they only lost about 30s.
