Thomas Fitzmaurice was fastest by quite a margin through the opening 2 stages and then on stage 3, the second run over the Headley’s Bridge test, it was Brian O’Mahony who set the roads alight with a time of 9.14 as against Fitzmaurice who clocked 9.19, Niall Maguire 9.20 and Kevin Barrett 9.27. In actual fact it was Declan Boyle who was 4th fastest on 9.25 which was pretty stunning for a Mk2 Escort. When O’Mahony reached the stage finish he said. “We changed to fresh rubber and also altered the set up of the car slightly but most of all I tidied up my driving”.

Rally leader Thomas Fitzmaurice told us. “We had a good stage and drove to the notes. There’s not a lot left to be honest. The tyres, the car, everything was working well”. Kevin Barrett also said that he had a good run as did Niall Maguire. When Niall was at the finish control he got news that his son Shane’s GpN Subaru had stopped in the stage at junction 6, reason as yet unknown.

In Group N Colm Murphy had a subdued first couple of stages but got the hammer down to record fastest GpN time through SS3. The Limerick man said at the end of the stage. “The back wheels were locking up but instead of being afraid of her I thought I’d harness her to get round the tight corners. We had a straight on overshoot at the bridge in the stage, my co driver Don thinks the spectators are still running!” Eugene Meegan was fastest GpN over the first 2 stages but a spin dented his time in SS3, 13s down on Murphy. Mark Donnelly set 2nd fastest GpN time so he’s getting on the pace.

We mentioned above that Declan Boyle had set 4th fastest time o/a in his Mk2 Escort. After the stage the Donegal man looked as cool as a cucumber and said. “A nice run”. Frank Kelly is just back from a quick visit to Australia where he was visiting the Drummond Motorsport organisation to glean as much information as he could on the DMS suspension. Frank also set a scorching time through stage 3 but it was 7s down on Declan Boyle. Tyrone man Frank said. “That’s as hard as I can go”. Mike Quinn also speeded up and he reckoned his brakes were getting better and there was still a bit more to come.

Roy White’s MG S2000 did not come through the finish of stage 3, possibly something to do with the electrical glitch on stage 2.
