UNOFFICIAL LEADERBOARD AFTER STAGE 2 Desmonds Grave

8th (7) Colm Murphy/Don Montgomery (Impreza N) 20.18
9th (8) Mike Quinn/Grainne McEnery (Escort) 20.23
10th (127) Mark Donnelly/Andrew Purcell (Lancer N) 20.30

Having been fastest on the opening stage by quite a margin Thomas Fitzmaurice throttled back ever so slightly for stage 2 but was still fastest again, by 7s from Kevin Barrett with Niall Maguire a further 5s back. Brian O’Mahony was 10s in arrears of Maguire. When Maguire brought his Subaru into service he said. “That time of Thomas Fitzmaurice on the opening stage really winded me. I’m trying my best but maybe I’ve had too many breakfasts. We were on a medium slick tyre for those 2 stages so we’ll try a harder one now to see if it makes any difference”.

Eugene Meegan continues to lead GpN from Colm Murphy. Murphy’s co driver Don Montgomery said. “We’re deliberately not going at a crazy pace, trying to mind the car after the gearbox rebuild. Maybe we will step it up a bit later today”. Mark Donnelly set a good time through stage 2 to hold 3rd in GpN from Shane Maguire.

Declan Boyle was fastest of the Escorts through stage 1 but on stage 2 the Donegal man stalled his Mk2 on a square right and the engine refused to fire up that cost 20s. Frank Kelly had a screamer of a time through the second stage. His co-driver Liam Brennan gave him a slap on the ear plus a severe scolding to waken him up! Mike Quinn was slightly disappointed in his time through stage 2 but reckoned the brakes on his Escort were not working properly, possibly down to new pads fitted this morning and not bedded in. Frank Sweeney was best of the Class 13 Escorts after SS2 from Tommy Mason with Charlie Hickey 3rd. Mason did have some brake problems and Hickey found the gravel patches through all the square corners at the end of SS2 very difficult. Tim Enright was lucky not to lose time when his Escort clipped a stone at the end of stage 1 that punctured a wheel.

John McQuaid and his co-driver Seamus O’Connor lost time in SS1 when their Escort suffered a puncture. They then had to do SS2 when an odd tyre fitted but still set a very quick time. However, having changed a wheel on the road section between stages McQuaid then got mixed up in the blockage caused by David Murphy, so we are still awaiting confirmation on McQuaid’s time.

Roy White was 6th after the first stage but has slipped to 13th as his MG S2000 inexplicably cut out after a junction in SS2. The car stayed silent for nearly a minute and then burst into life again. Reason as yet unknown. Pat Kelly in his Subaru is 22nd o/a and told us. “There was a lot of gravel in stage 2 and we had 2 attempts at the ditch which is enough for today!”
