The above times are from the early runners only. The stage was stopped after 20 cars. Reason as yet unknown.
Denis Cronin was first on the road in his Subaru but the car was suffering a flat driver side rear tyre when it came to the stage finish. Denis did not seem to lose too much time and was changing the wheel before gong up to stage 2, Mass Rock. Eamonn Daly was 2nd on the road but his Lancer stopped at an early junction with a mechanical problem. This left Barry Meade 2nd on the road and the Escort driver said. “No messing, good clean run”. Ed O’Callaghan was 9s down on Meade and reported no problems. Mike Quinn who is in a new car today had no real testing time and said at stage finish. “I’m finding it strange”.
As can be seen above UK based Limerick man Eamonn Hanley was fastest through the stage. Co-driver Frank Curtin gave a little whoop of delight when he saw the other drivers times. This is Hanley’s first rally in a 4-wheel drive car so he has obviously got to grips with the McGarrity Circuit of Ireland winning Subaru. Padraig Cummins had a good run to take 7th fastest on that opening test despite the rear end of his G3 Escort moving about a lot.
Mark Sheahan was quickest of the Citroen C2R2s although Mark’s car was running out of brakes towards stage finish. David Guest’s Civic stopped the clock on 12.22 despite being slowed in the dust from the car in front. Vincent O’Shea’s Escort Cosworth started the stage on schedule but there was no sign of him at stage finish.
