When Darren Gass brought his Subaru into service here at Junction 1 he said. “Going OK. The first 3 miles of stage did not click apart from that it was OK”. Derek McGarrity in 2nd said. “A good enough run. As regards tyre choice I don’t know what would be right and what would be wrong. We are going for a harder tyre now”. Third placed Darragh O’Riordan commented. “I was a small bit nervous to start but I feel I have no Tarmac Championship pressure and I’m really enjoying it now. The last two stages were brilliant”.
On Rally NI for the British Championship contenders Keith Cronin was very impressive on that opening loop of 3 stages. Keith said. “The tyre choice wasn’t the best but OK. We were able to do what we needed to do”. Elfyn Evans said. “No problems. Everything is working OK. There were a few tricky sections”.
Further stories included ……Tom Cave admitted that he struggled a bit following an early spin that seemed to affect his co-ordination. Mark Donnelly hopes to get his flat shift gear change fixed here at service, but admitted it wasn’t costing him too much time. Tommy Doyle had a great opening stage but then, despite his best efforts, the performance dropped off in stages 2 and 3. He reckons it could be due to a damaged rear suspension unit. Lucky enough, a new one has just arrived at his hotel from the people he bought the car from “My Racing”. Alastair Fisher said. “We’re not setting the world alight but I don’t know why”. A smashed side mirror on Alastair’s Fiesta seemed a fair demonstration that he is certainly trying hard.
Guy Wilks said of his Twingo. “The car needs development, more miles. There is only so much can be done here but the French engineers are gathering lots of data.” Desi Henry has had a good run and reckons he needs harder compound tyres on his Citroen. Jonny Greer was a bit conservative in his tyre choice but fitted two harder spares and went well through stages 2 and 3. Osian Pryce who is a brilliant 3rd o/a admitted to a few little moments and said. “It keeps us awake”. Finnish driver Korhonen reported running wide on a corner on Torr Head and has bent the rear suspension of his Fabia R2 hopefully he will get it fixed at service. Matthew Cathcart fitted wrong tyres and had a major moment on the 1st stage.
