The onset of rain has changed the complexion of this Killarney Rally of
the Lakes somewhat, Molls Gap suddenly became a different ball game in
the wet and Mark Higgins in the Pirelli Subaru got it just right to set
a fastest time, 6s up on Kris Meeke, 10s up on Donnelly. Rally leader
Kris Meeke said. “It was slippy over the shiny pieces of tar, I
possibly could have had a different compound tyre. I expect Eugene’s
experience to show up on this stuff.” Behind the leading group
Kevin Lynch ran into trouble. Kevin was 5th overnight in his Focus
WRC, but sustained a puncture and a broken brake pipe to drop nearly
5 minutes and we hear that he may have withdrawn before the next stage,
Ballaghbeama. The only other real change to the leaderboard was
that Gareth MacHale set a brilliant 2nd fastest time to move from an overnight
6th to 4th. There is a small query over Mikkelsen’s
time, just by a couple of seconds, but he is still a very strong 3rd.
In Group N Colm Murphy continues to lead. James Cullen was running
very late but still set a good time on the Gap. Willie Fannin and Kevin
Kelleher were 3rd and 4th in group N but they were delayed over Molls
Gap by Denis Biggerstaff’s Impreza WRC which was blowing clouds
of blue smoke and going pretty slowly.
Looking back over Angus & Jane Sealy’s overnight interim results
sheets – Ken O’Neill/Frank Curtin led class 6 in their Puma
from Andrew Bushe in his ex McShea Saxo. Enda Hallinan led cl.2
in his Civic from young James Wozencroft with Lorna Smith 3rd, the latter
two in their Suzuki Swifts. Pat Callanan (Civic) led cl.7 from Colm Noonan
(Peugeot 306). Andrew Fanning (Puma) led cl.5 from Brian Flanagan (Micra).
In the National Rally James M Stafford had a substantial lead over Fergus
O’Meara with Phillip Cross 3rd, Wesley Patterson 4th, Jer O’Donovan
in his Escort Cosworth 5th and Liam Davis (Mk2 Escort) 6th. John Hickey
was 7th just ahead of Charlie Hickey. Mike Moloney 9th and Brian Richards
from Wales 10th in his RS Escort.
Todd Falvey led the Historics in his post Historic Porsche from Denis
Moynihan in his Escort with Don Moynihan (Escort) 3rd. Adrian Kermode/Maurice
Beckett were 4th in their Porsche from Tommy Mason (Escort). Sean Tracey
was 6th in his BMW having lost some time when he stopped to make sure
Joe Connolly and his son Gareth were Ok after they crashed their Escort.
