The above times are from the first few cars only and there are some quick drivers sfurther down the field could well come into the reckoning.

The opening stage, Billa, was mostly dry throughout but stage 2, Achonry, was fairly damp so some of the drivers opted for an intermediate tyre which wouldn’t have been fantastic for stage 1 but should be good on stage 2. There is service in Tubbercurry after stage 2.

Aaron MacHale was one of the drivers who picked an intermediate and said it was like driving on marbles toward the end of the stage. Otherwise Dunlop Championship Aaron had a good run.

Charlie Donnelly said he was just bedding himself in. Sean Devine and Niall Maguire both reported clean runs.

Drivers in trouble on that opening stage included Devon visitor David Kynaston. He recorded a reasonably good time for the stage but then parked his Audi just up the road from the finish of the stage and said the front differential had gone.

Willie Fannin was going very slowly at stage finish and he reckoned his rally was over. His Imnpreza differential having packed the fiddle.

Frank Wray was slowed by a misfire on his Lancer and dropped some time.

Ian Barrett was fastest group n despite having to pass both Frank Wray and Willie Fannin in the stage.

Michael Curran reported a massive moment in the stage and the car skirted along the wall of a big shed, co driver Fabian McShane just didn’t know how they got away with it.

Gary McPhillips had a great run in his Mk2 Escort, Rodney Wilton was 7s slower having had a spin in his Escort.

More news later.
