Guy Wilks was fastest through the opening 2 stages, his co driver
Phil Pugh saying at the end of the Chamot Hill stage “I’m
surprised, it felt slow!” Guy said. “When we started
the stage the diff wasn’t locked in properly, I had disengaged
it for the road section and then forgot that it doesn’t come
on automatically. You have to switch the car off and then switch
it on again and it works, or else switch it on manually. I’m
in too many different cars!” Second placed Gwyndaf Evans reported
no problems.
Phillip Morrow seemed fairly comfortable in 3rd place, Phillip was
letting some air out of the tyres at the start of stage 2 as the
pressure had risen with the heat generated, and also as the surface
was pretty slippy and muddy.
Ryan Champion found the surface very slippery and said. “The
car takes a lot of steering, we need to soften it off a bit”.
British Champion Mark Higgins was slightly unhappy at stage finish
and said. “I ran over a rock in the middle of the road, thought
I had a puncture, and the steering was slightly knocked, then I
stalled at a junction, not a good start.”
Definitely not making a good start was Mark’s brother David
– his new Toyota S2000 had all sorts of fuel pressure problems
and also a replacement fuel pump seemed to be faulty so the car
was then very late into the opening stage, and indeed may be over
the maximum lateness. The main thing for the team now is to get
some miles done and hopefully keep going, if necessary under the
Super Rally rules.
Just outside the top 10 above Nick Kenny was 11th, Rob Gill 12th,
David Meredith 13th and George Thomas in his Citroen 14th and leading
the class with James Wozencroft 2nd in his Suzuki Swift Sport.
In the Historic Rally Richard Tuthill would appear to be the fastest
through the opening 4 stages in his Porsche, but of course there
are lots of different classes in the Historics so it is early days
yet. There was major disappointment when Steve Perez pulled his
Vodka Kick Lancia Stratos out after only the first stage because
of severe gearbox troubles.
