Mickey Curran retained his lead after this 2nd
stage but fastest car through the stage was Gordon Rogers while
Russell Woods turned in a cracking time and Mark Alcorn slipped from
2nd to 3rd when his Toyota caught up with
another car and was stuck behind for a couple of miles.
Mickey Curran commented after the stage. “We
made a bit of a hash of a hairpin but otherwise we went well. What I
thought was gearbox trouble earlier on turned out to be a big nut
came loose on the back axle.” Gordon Rogers moved from 3rd
to 2nd and said. “We had a good run, its going to be an
awful rip on the last stage!”
As we mentioned earlier Mark Alcorn wasn’t a
bit happy about having caught Peter Greene with about 5 miles of the
stage to go. Alcorn eventually got past but he reckons he certainly
dropped a handful of seconds. Arthur Kierans was slightly
disappointed at stage finish, his Escort sustaining a massive spin
at the crossroads just before the end which cost a few seconds.
Russell Woods, running at No.16, caught
another car just before the finish of the stage and it cost him a
fraction, doesn’t know how much, but so close is it at the front
every second is significant.
Gerry Smith didn’t have such a good run that
time, had an overshoot 2 miles from the end at a square right.
James Cassidy had a bit of a moment, put the car off slightly but
got away with it. Shaun Murphy spun his Escort, no damage. Columba
Henna lost a small bit of time, his Corolla suffering a misfire.
Gene Callan spun his Escort at the first junction. Francie McKenna
retired his Peugeot because of a blown head gasket. Danny McGee had
a good run in his hired Peugeot, aided and abetted by non other than
Charlie Donnelly on the notes. Vincent McAree set a cracking time
on the first stage and is challenging hard for the class lead,
despite his blue Peugeot 106 having no intercom.
