The battle between the leading two, Patrick Elliott and
Charlie Donnelly, continued unabated through stage 5 with Donnelly
3s faster than Elliott which sliced Elliott’s lead to 11s with 3
stages remaining. Michael Barrable was 1s faster than Noel Redmond
through the stage but Redmond holds on to 3rd place by
8s. Patrick Elliott said at the end of the stage “We had a good
run, no problems”. Earlier Patrick had told us “We were nearly off
the road, there was gravel everywhere and we almost followed a car
that had gone off on a previous loop”. Charlie Donnelly reported
after that stage 5 “We’re starting to get it together now”. Noel
Redmond reported “We had a clean enough run I could probably go a
bit quicker the next time over this stage”. David James said
earlier about his intercom problems, that is all sorted. He was also
a bit unhappy about his Focus brakes and he overshot a couple of
corners in stage 4.
Aaron MacHale has moved up to 10th overall now
following his stage 4 puncture. Aaron’s time was nothing special
through stage 5, 16s down on Donnelly. His body language told of
just getting the Focus to the end of the rally now, any chance of a
win gone and he said “We’ll just leave the tyres on that we have, no
sense in trying anything new now”.
Alan Ring slowed slightly through stage 5 following a 5th
gear moment. While Willie Fannin gave it a huge blast and was a
full 13s up on Ring at stage finish. Gabriel Martin is staying in
touch with the group N leaders but making no impression on their
times and holds 3rd in the category. Ian Barrett was a
bit down in the dumps at stage finish at being a few seconds off the
pace. Tadgh Linehan was also down a few seconds after over shooting
a junction.
Maurice Moffett turned in a superb time, said he really
enjoyed the stage in his little Starlet. Maurice continues to lead
the 2 wheel drive contenders. Mick McQuaid stopped in stage 5 with
some mechanical problem in his Escort. Managed to get the car going
and proceeded to stage 6. Trevor Harding was slowed through stage
5, his Impreza full of fumes. Moffett’s total now is 36.44, Willie
Whitty is on 37.33, Gwyn Thomas on 37.38. More news later. BRIAN
