Derek McGarrity had a niggly
problem with his Subaru water injection system yesterday afternoon
and the mechanics have been working away trying to get the car
on absolutely full song. They seem to have succeeded. McGarrity
was fastest over Molls Gap this morning with a time of 9.15.0.
Tim McNulty did 9.21.1. Eugene Donnelly 9.26.5.
Main stories from the Gap
are that James O’Sullivan’s Lancer went off the road.
Kevin Kelleher’s Lancer, 15th overnight, blew its turbo
at Ladies View.
Denis Cronin feels that his turbo isn’t pulling and he lost
a place to Boland this morning. George Cullen’s Impreza
has reportedly stopped on Molls Gap.
There were some adjustments
to the overnight results as the bogey times were attended to.
Tim McNulty appeared to have a 44s lead last night over Eugene
Donnelly but when the adjustments were introduced this was reduced
to 40s. There were also some time penalties removed.
Class leaders overnight included:
Enda Hallinan in his Civic ahead of the similar Civic of Tommy
Doyle’s in class 2. Class 3 was led by Eugene Meegan in
his Civic type R from John Murphy. Class 4 is for the big group
N machines and showed Seamus Leonard with a 37s lead over Munster
Joinery man Alan Ring in his Subaru. Third in gpN was James Foley,
Roy White 4th, Kevin Kelleher was 5th and of course he has just
retired which brings Willie Fannin up a place.
Class 5 was led by Andrew
Fanning in his Puma ahead of Pat Mulcahy (Swift). Class 6 showed
local man Keith Cronin setting the pace in his 206 ahead of Super
1600 Champion Brian O’Mahony. Brian was having a subdued
rally by his standards. Andrew Browne was 3rd in his Civic and
Circuit of Ireland class winner Andrew Bushe 4th, his 106 completely
outpaced for top speed on these fast stages. Ken O’Neill
had led that class very convincingly in his Puma but the engine
over revved itself on one of the big long straights and he switched
her off.
Guy Woodcock had a great day in his Escort Maxi to lead class
7 ahead of local Nissan dealer Dave Randles in his Almera.
In the modified section of
the rally Phil Collins in his fabulous Escort led by over a minute
from Mark Courtney (Celica) with Wesley Patterson in his Escort
3rd. Wesley commented. “Phil’s got a bigger engine
than me. A bigger wallet than me. And bigger balls than me!”
Red Mills man Joe Connolly
led the Historics overnight in his Mk1 Escort with Don Moynihan
2nd and John Farrell 3rd – these leading Post Historics
Escort setting a huge pace, faster than many of the cars in the
main rally. Ray Cunningham leads his class in his full Historic
Mini Cooper. Todd Falvey is 4th o/a in his Porsche and Isle of
Man visitor Adrian Kermode with Maurice Beckett on the notes is
9th in his similar 911.
