Adrian McElvaney was joint fastest with Kevin O’Donoghue through
stage 2, the pair separated by 7 seconds which should make for quite
a race through stages 3 and 4. James Cullen in 3rd commented here
at service. “That’s it, there’s nothing left,
and the car was flat out through that 2nd stage”.
Kevin O’Donoghue felt that he had tightened up his Lancer’s
suspension just a little too much for that 2nd stage while Adrian
McElvaney reported a good run and that he was getting into the groove.
Eamonn Daly in 4th place had fading brakes through the two stages
and is hoping to change the pads here at service.
Kevin Kelleher in 5th is still frustrated at his Lancer’s
engine going on and off cylinders and is considering pulling out
of the rally here at service. Kevin told us he had 2 huge moments
in the 2nd stage, that he is having to overdrive the car to compensate
for the engine.
Mike Quinn in 6th continues to set the pace for best in 2 wheel
drive although he found the 2nd stage very slippery. Stuart Darcy
in 7th reckoned the tyre pressures in his Subaru were all wrong
for the first stage, it obviously cost him a few seconds and then
he had a good run on the 2nd stage.
Last year’s winner John Kearney made a hesitant start but
was well on the pace through the 2nd stage. Anthony O’Halloran
in 9th had a good run in his Manta and Tadgh Linehan in 10th lost
time when he spun his Subaru at an uphill hairpin right.
Further stories include – Tom Randles losing a few seconds
when the fuse for the intercooler in the Celica popped out. Thomas
Fitzmaurice put his Escort Cosworth off the road on the first stage,
lost about 3 minutes and then had a good run through the 2nd stage
despite the car not handling particularly well. Ken O’Neill
in the Puma lost time behind Sean Lyons’ stalled Escort Maxi.
Otherwise Ken had a good run, his total so far 15.27. Aidan Walsh
is well down the time sheets, co driver Jim Casey saying that the
tyres just didn’t seem to be working.
Mike Moloney had a better run through the 2nd stage having lost
a few seconds on the first when he stopped to make sure Pat Donegan
was OK. John Hickey is on a total of 15.29 having caught a car in
stage 1. Christy Carey/Richard Talbot arrived into service with
a smashed front wing and loads of straw sticking out of the Subaru,
evidence of a c lose encounter with a chicane. Sean Flanagan/Brian
Miller are out for the first time in the ex Alan Ring N12. They
are still getting used to their new car and lost a few seconds when
they caught and passed John Quinn’s Chevette in stage 1, but
Sean set a pretty respectable time in stage 2.
A few more times – Ed Synan is on 15.06 and 11th o/a. Diarmuid
Keohane 16.07: tom Randles 15.22: Peter Kelly 15.26: Sean Lyons
16.21: Gary Reidy 15.31: Fergus O’Meara 16.07.
