Headline news from stage 1 is that Dunlop Championship leader Patrick Elliott has retired his Subaru while top group N runner Alan Ring has also retired on stage 1, as has Tadgh Linehan.

Patrick Elliott was running first on the road but it was Charlie Donnelly in his Corolla who arrived at the stage finish first, Charlie reporting that Patrick’s Subaru was pulled in at the side of the road, Charlie unable to see if there was any body damage. No doubt we’ll get the full story later. Charlie himself said “Usual juttery first stage, not so bad”. Next down the stage was Aaron MacHale and he confirmed that Elliott was still stopped, Aaron also saying that he was a bit cautious, felt the stage was a bit slippy.

Tim McNulty’s Subaru came to a halt with tape streaming from the bumper, evidence of Tim over shooting a junction. Michael Barrable had a good run through the stage, set a good time although Michael said that he had a couple of big moments over shiny tar when he “held on for dear life!” Noel Redmond also had a good run, Noel feeling that he kept it clean, was reasonably cautious and there’s another 15s in the stage. Jack Sleator lost a little bit of time possible on the wrong tyres. Martin Doherty had a good run despite feeling a bit sick.

Ian Barrett was the fastest of the group N runners on 6.39. Willie Fannin did a 6.49, Kevin Kelleher 6.47, Gabriel Martin 6.42, PJ McGrath was 2nd fastest gpN with 6.40. Willie Fannin seemed to get knocked out of his stride a bit when he saw Alan Ring stopped. These 2 are having a massive battle for Dunlop Championship points in Group N. Ring has been on the gpN podium of every event this year. His accident happened on a cautioned right 4 over gravel not long after the start of the stage. Tadgh Linehan’s accident happened at junction 5, a turn hard right just before the cemetery and his Impreza hit a pillar. Co driver Mark Kane was taken into the ambulance for a chick over and appears to be OK.

In the 2 wheel drive division Enda Keenan seems to be the early pace setter, a handful of seconds up on Maurice Moffett after that first stage.

David McNulty had a good time in stage 1 of 6.40, David out in an Impreza. While Sean Gallagher had a 6.46. Daragh Raftery made a cautious start and did 6.56, Daragh has Sean Duggan co-driving. John Spain seemed a bit hesitant on that first stage in his Celica, his time 6.57.
